హిరణ్యాక్షుని కుమారుడైన రక్తవిలోచన, వశిష్ఠ నది ఒడ్డున శివునికి పదివేల సంవత్సరాలు విపరీతమైన తపస్సు చేశాడు. శంకరుడు. అతని తపస్సుతో ఎంతో సంతోష పడి ప్రత్యక్షమైతాడు. అప్పుడు రక్తవిలోచన అడిగిన వరమును ప్రసాదిస్తాడు, తన శరీరం నుండి యుద్ధంలో తన రక్తముతో తడిచే ఇసుక రేణువుల సంఖ్యకు సమానముగా అతని కంటే బలంగా మరియు శక్తివంతుడైన రాక్షసులు తయారవ్వాలని కోరాడు మరియు వారు అతనికి యుద్ధంలో శత్రువులను చంపేవారికి సాయంగా ఉండాలని కోరాడు.

తన మానవాతీత శక్తులతో, అతను భూతకాలంలో మునులను, దేవతలను మరియు అమాయకులైన ప్రజలను హింసించడం మొదలుపెట్టాడు. వశిష్ఠ మహర్షి మీద ప్రతీకారం తీర్చుకోవడానికి ఎదురుచూస్తున్న విశ్వామిత్ర మహర్షి ఇదే అదునుగా భావించి తన 100 కుమారులను రెచ్చగొడుతాడు. గౌతమీ నదిని సముద్రంలో కలిపిన తర్వాత వశిష్ఠ మహర్షి కఠినమైన తపస్సును చేస్తారు. అరుంధతి తన పిల్లలను కాపాడమని వశిష్ట మహర్షిని కోరుతుంది. అప్పుడు నరసింహ స్వామి గరుడ వాహనం తో మహర్షి వద్ద ప్రత్యక్షమవుతారు. ఈ భీకర యుద్ధంలో రాక్షసుడైన రక్తవిలోచన యొక్క శక్తి పెరుగుతూనే ఉంటుంది. అప్పుడు శ్రీ నరసింహ స్వామి తన దివ్య దృష్టితో రక్తవిలోచనునికి ఉన్న వరాన్ని కనిపెడతారు. స్వామి వారు అప్పుడు ఒక మాయా శక్తిని సృష్టిస్తారు.

ఆ శక్తి యొక్క రక్తపు చుక్క భూమిని తాకకుండా తన నాలుకతో భూమినంత పరచమని కోరుతారు. తరువాత స్వామి వారు ఆ రాక్షసుణ్ణి తన చక్రం తో వధించేస్తారు, మరియు చక్రాన్ని, ఆయన చేతులను ఒక కొలనును సృష్టించి అందులో కడిగివేసుకుంటారు. దానినే ఇప్పుడు చక్ర తీరం" అంటారు. ఈ తీర్థంలో స్నానం చేసినవారు ప్రస్తుత జీవితంలో చేసిన పాపముల నుండి ఉపశమనం పొందవచ్చని నమ్ముతారు. వశిష్ట మహర్షి కోరిక మేరకు స్వామి వారు తన భార్య అయిన లక్ష్మి దేవితో ఇక్కడే పశ్చిమ దిశగా కొలువై వుంటారు. మాయ శక్తి గుర్రముపై రావడం వలన ఆమెను అశ్వరుడాంబిక అని పిలుస్తారు. ఈమెను గుర్తక్క అని కూడా పిలుస్తారు. యుద్ధాల నుండి సృష్టించబడిన రక్తపు కొలనును రక్తకుల్య అని పిలుస్తారు.

శ్రీ లక్ష్మీ నరసింహస్వామి, అంతర్వేది

తూర్పు గోదావరి జిల్లా లో వున్న మరో పుణ్యక్షేత్రం అంతర్వేది మూడు పాయలుగా చీలిన గోదావరి నది పాయ వశిష్ఠ గోదావరి అంతర్వేదిలో వద్ద బంగాళాఖాతంలో సంగమిస్తుంది. అంతర్వేది త్రికోణాకారపు (లంక) దీవిలొ వుంది. ఇక్కడ ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన శ్రీ లక్ష్మీనరసింహస్వామి పుణ్యతీర్థం భక్తుల కోర్కెలు తీర్చే పుణ్యక్షేత్రం.... పురాణాలలో కూడా దీని ప్రస్థావన ఉంది. అతి ప్రాచీన ఆలయం ఇది. ఇక్కడ నరసింహస్వామి లక్ష్మీ సమేతుడై కొలువుతీరాడు....

గోదావరీ నదికి ఇటువేపు ఉన్న "సఖినేటి పల్లి" మండలానికి చెందిన "అంతర్వేది" తూర్పుగోదావరి జిల్లాలో ఉంది. అటు పశ్చిమ గోదావరి జిల్లా నరసాపురంకు సమీపంలో వుంది. గోదావరి దాటి అంతర్వేది చేరుకోవచ్చు. సముద్ర తీరాన ఉన్న ఈ ఆలయం ఎంతో విశిష్టతను సంతరించుకుంది. ఇది దక్షిణ కాశిగా పేరుపొందింది. కాశీకి వెళ్ళలేని వారు ఒక్కసారి అంతర్వేది వెళ్ళి వస్తే చాలని అంటారు. పవిత్ర గోదావరిలో స్నానం చేసి లక్ష్మీనరసింహస్వామిని దర్శించవచ్చు.

ఇక్కడి స్థలపురాణం: సూతమహాముని అంతర్వేదిని గురించి శౌనకాది మహర్షులకు చెప్పినట్లు తెలుస్తుంది. ఒకసారి బ్రహ్మ రుద్రయాగం చేయాలని సంకల్పించి యాగానికి వేదికగా ఈ ప్రదేశాన్ని ఎన్నుకుని శివలింగాన్ని ప్రతిష్ఠిస్తాడు. అందుకే ఈ ప్రదేశానికి అంతర్వేది అనే పేరు వచ్చింది అని చెబుతారు. వశిష్టమహర్షి ఇక్కడ యాగం చేసిన కారణంగా ఇది అంతర్వేదిగా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందింది.

Raktavilochana, the son of Hiranyaksha, did tremendous penance for ten thousand years on the banks of the Vasishta river, to please Lord Siva and to get his grace. Lord Sankara was very much pleased with his penance and appeared before him. He promised to bless him with whatever he would desire. Raktavilochana asked him that the number of sand particles drenched by the blood drops falling from his body on to the ground at war, would produce equal number of Rakshasas as strong and vigorous as himself after and they would assist him at war and become one with him after killing all the enemies.

With his supernatural powers, he started troubling Sages, Devas and innocent people on the earth. Sage Vishwamitra who was waiting for an opportunity to take revenge on sage Vashista, provoked and diverted the demon on sage Vashista's 100 sons. Sage Vashista was performing a strict penance on the banks, after diverting river Gowthami to the sea. Arundhathi urged Vasishta to save their children, for which Sage Vasishta prayed for the Lord Narasimha who appeared before him with his Garuda Vahana. In the fierce battle, the demon Rakthavilochana keeps gaining strength. Lord Narasimha understood that this all due to the boon he acquired and created maya Sakthi who came on a horse to the battlefield.

Lord asked her to stretch her tongue and cover the entire Earth so that the demon's blood drops will not touch the Earth. Later Lord killed the demon with his discus (Sudarsana Chakra) and washed his discus and hands, by creating the pool, which later came to known as Chakra Theertham". It is believed that whoever takes the bath in the Theerthans will be relieved from the sins in the present Lord self-manifested here with his Consort Sri Mahalakshmi facing West direction on Sage Vashista's request. As Maya Sakti came on horse so she called by Aswarudambika, also called by Gurtakka. The blood pool which was created from the battles was called by the Rakthakulya
